How to write the perfect car description when selling your car. 7 Pro Tips! - LetsDoCars

You want to sell your car, but there hundreds if not thousand of the same car brand and model. So how do you stand out? There are two quick ways you can differentiate yourself and make your advert unique, exciting and more special. The first one is fantastic photos which you can read more about here, the second one is with a strong and comprehensive description of the car you are selling. Something so simple, yet again sellers fail over and over again to present their cars for sale properly. In this section, we will give you a step-by-step guide on how to write a great description when selling your car to highly increase your chances of selling quickly.

If you think about it, the two main attention captivates of potential buyers are the photos, to make the customer curious and click on the advert and then it is all up to the description. The potential buyer will likely scroll through the photos and then immediately right after, find the description and read it.

You may think that this is only an art car dealerships have mastered, however, this is far from truth. Anyone can write a great car description and properly present their car. All it needs is a little bit of patience and honesty. Read through our pro tips below and by the end you will be able to write a car description like a master.

Honesty

There is nothing worse that lying or overselling your car to someone. We all tend to view the cars before we proceed with the purchase and anything that was overestimated will be seeing in the viewing. The only result is for the potential buyer to be upset which makes it increasingly unlikely to buy your car as they do not trust you now. The buyer will ask themselves “if they have lied about this, what else are they hiding?”.

So do yourself a favour and just be honest about the car you are selling. It will save you and potential buyers a lot of time, a lot of phone calls, questions and wasted time in viewings without the car being sold which is the initial target.

Talk to your buyer

There is a reason why car brands have body types, different engines etc. They are talking to specific buyers. You can do that too. Think about who would be interested in my car? What function does my car do well? Why would someone buy this car? And shape your description around this.

For example, if you have an estate car with a diesel engine with an automatic gearbox your potential buyer will likely be a young family so you can shape your description around it like this:

  • This is a fantastic car for a young family with plenty of boot space in the back for your groceries, weekend activities, school runs etc. If you ever need more space, both rear seats can fold down, nearly doubling the carrying capacity of the car. Furthermore, you can add roof rails which allow you to further increase your carrying capacity. Due to the body type of the car, there is ample space in the back for 2 child carriers using the 2 ISOFIX ports and comfortably seats 3 adults for both long and short distances. A great aspect of the car is its fantastic fuel efficiency. Due to a very grundy diesel engine, your can eat the highway miles with minimal consumption, great acceleration off the line and smooth shifts through the automatic gearbox which makes the car an absolute joy to drive and own.
See how we have shaped the description around the buyer? What we are trying to do here is to help the buyers visualise themselves in the car and using it. That is half the battle. So please, spend 3 minutes to think who your buyer is and then shape the advert around them. It will actually reduce the time you will need to write the description as you now know who you are talking to rather than writing in general terms.

Car history

One of the most common questions in Cyprus when someone is trying to buy a car is to ask for the service history. And everyone likes to hear that the car comes with full service history from the manufacturer. As long as the car has full service history though, even if it was done by an independent technician, you are doing great.

Write a line in your description stating the status of the service history you have such as:

  • The car comes with full service history from the main dealership which was completed at the appropriate service intervals

If you have partial service history, say that, or even if you have no service history, again, say it. Remember rule no.1, be honest.

Features of you car

  • Typically, we like to divide this into 3 sections:
  • Entertainment Features
  • Safety Features
  • Convenience Features

With this in mind, it would be really good for you to outline all the features of your car divided into these three sections for easier read.

This is one of the most important sections of your description as features are mainly what differentiate one car from the other apart from colour and engine.

Below we provide some examples on each section:

  • Entertainment:
    • Multimedia Touchscreen
    • Apple Carplay
    • Android Auto
    • Sound System
    • Bluetooth
    • USB
    • Radio
    • DAB Radio
    • AUX
    • Upgraded sound system
  •  Safety:
    • Reversing Camera
    • 4WD
    • Blind Spot Warning
    • Central Locking
    • Rain Sensing Wipers
    • Spare Wheel
    • LED Headlamps
    • Traffic Sign Recognition
    • ABS
    • Lane Keep Assist
    • Forward Collision Mitigation
    • Airbags
  • Convenience:
    • Air Conditioning
    • Dual Zone Climate Control
    • Auto Headlamps
    • Electric Handbrake
    • Heated Seats
    • Keyless Entry
    • Massaging Seats
    • Roof Rails
    • Power Folding Mirrors
    • Rear Privacy Glass
    • Electrically Adjusted Seats
    • Heated Windscreen
There are many more features available on cars and you know your car better than anyone. Make sure you list as many as possible so potential buyers know what thy are buying and what they get. The more features, the higher the price is likely to be as well so you can ask for more money, especially if your car has features that many other cars of the same type do not have.

Previous owners and upgrades

This is of paramount importance. You need to state the number of previous owners of your car. Again, this is one of the most highly used questions in Cyprus when a buyer is interested in a car. “How may previous owners did it have?”.

Obvious as it is, the lower number of previous owners the higher the value of the car as there was less risk for the car to be misused. Also, the more owners the car has, it may raise some questions to potential buyers as to why people buy and sell this car.

You may see two similar cars, one has 2 owners in 10 years and the other has 5. Which one do you think will attract more potential buyers?

Also, in Cyprus, we like to play and tweak our cars. Again, it is extremely important to let potential buyers know if there are any engine, mechanically cosmetic upgrades on the car such as exhausts, spoilers, engine mappings, interior changes, upgraded alloy wheels, upgraded suspension, brakes etc. Regardless, the buyer needs and has the right to know. Always remember rule number 1 – Be Honest.

Easy on the eye

How many times have you opened a page with the intend to read something and as soon as you saw all the text in one paragraph you simply closed it and never went back? Well same applies here.

Use short paragraphs to present your car. Ideally, use one paragraph per section outline above. This will give you a great starting point and a great, easy to read description where buyers can make sense of what you are writing.

What would you be looking for?

Can buying is always a spinning circle. One moment you are selling a car, the next you are buying. So use your experience from looking at other people’s adverts and determine what is missing, what frustrates you and/or what is good and you found useful. Most likely if you found it either frustrating or useful. other buyers felt the same as well, so use this knowledge and experience to your advantage.

As a great rule of thumb, write the description as you were trying to sell the car to yourself.
